It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Jan A. J. Stolwijk, PhD. Born in the Netherlands on September 29, 1927, he came to the United States in 1955 and was naturalized in 1962.
Dr. Stolwijk was recruited to the John B. Pierce Laboratory in New Haven, Connecticut in 1957, where he studied human physiology, and rose to serve as Associate Director from 1974 to 1989. He transferred to Yale, first as Director of Graduate Studies, and then as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health from 1982-1989, and again as Acting Chair from 1994-1995. He retired as the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology and Public Health.
On the morning of Wednesday, February 17, 2021, surrounded by loved ones, he passed away peacefully at home at the age of 93. We thank Jan for his years of leadership at The Pierce Laboratory and his contributions to science. We wish his family blessings as they grieve their loss. He will be fondly remembered by the Pierce Lab family and all who knew him.
